Cuba Allows Import of Solar Panels for Non-commercial Use

This past week on July 28, Cuba began permitting the import of solar panels (photovoltaic) systems and their parts, for non-commercial use by Cubans. Solar system panels will also be exempt from customs duties as per Resolution 206/2021 published in the Official Gazette.

The import of solar panel systems will contribute to the development of renewable energy sources and increase participation in the electric power generation matrix. It was a necessary step on the path to expanding green energy usage in Cuba.

Solar energy is electrical energy obtained by the direct transformation of sunlight into electricity. Using solar panels has many benefits including lower electric bills and lower carbon footprints which is positive for the environment.

The Resolution, signed by Meisi Boñalos, the Minister of Finance and Prices, stated that solar panels, accessory parts and the grounding system that may be imported independently, make up fundamental parts and pieces.

The person importing the solar panel system will be responsible for the installation and its maintenance, as well as the re-contracting of the electric service to the Company. The individual must certify compliance with the regulations for installation and guarantee the functioning of the meter for measuring the energy generated.

Cuba’s Customs Office will receive updated technical information to enable the identification of photovoltaic systems and their accessories from the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
