Cuba and Egypt Sign Cooperation Agreement

On Wednesday, Cuba and Egypt signed a bilateral cooperation agreement that will open up new business opportunities for trade between the two countries.

Cuba and Egypt’s chambers of commerce signed the agreement during an online conference between the heads of the chambers and the Cuban ambassador to Cairo, Tania Aguiar Fernandez. Also at the virtual meeting were a number of companies which presented their products.

Ibrahim Mahmoud El Araby, the president of the Egyptian Chamber of Commerce said, “We have many projects and we hope to boost collaboration in areas such as mining, transportation, renewable energies, domestic trade, health, education, among others.”

Antonio Carricarte, the head of the Cuban Chamber of Commerce spoke of the need to relaunch trade relations.

Carricarte also thanked Cairo for its support against the U.S. economic embargo of Cuba.

Since 1958, Cuba and Egypt have held bilateral diplomatic relations since the opening of the Egyptian commission in Havana of that year.

In 1959, the Egyptians opened an embassy in the Cuban capital. Likewise, Cuba has an embassy in Cairo.

In 2010, the Egyptian Deputy Foreign Minister paid an official visit to Havana to meet with the Cuban Foreign Minister and other officials from the health and trade ministries.
