Today January 1, Cuba officially becomes a partner country of the BRICS, the prominent forum for political and economic cooperation among nations of the Global South. The platform includes founding members Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Also on January 1, Brazil assumes the presidency of the BRICS, marking a decisive moment for the nation as it seeks to advance a vision of more sustainable and inclusive global governance, deeper economic ties, and mobilize financing to combat climate change. It is the fourth time that Brazil has taken over in the rotating role of the presidency.
There are eight other states besides Cuba which become partners today, including Belarus, Bolivia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan, according to the Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation.
This enlargement marks a significant advance towards a multipolar economic and political order.
The BRICS represents almost half of the global population and 41% of world GDP (PPP).
Cuba needs the BRICS to circumvent the American blockade against the island. It represents a hope against U.S. interference and a solution to the current economic and energy crisis. The BRICS needs Cuba to circumvent the unipolarity of the US.
