Cuba to Begin Vaccination of 1.7 Million Havana Residents in May

Cuba will begin the vaccination of 1.7 million residents of Havana this May according to official sources. It is part of a study in which two of the five vaccines in the most advanced phase of trials, the Abdala and Soberana 02, will be used.

By April 24, all family doctors’ offices in Havana should be ready to carry out the vaccinations supported by the polyclinics hospitals and health institutions.

Cuba has a comprehensive health system that includes 449 polyclinics, 785 Basic Work Groups (GBT) and 10,869 clinics throughout the country.

It is estimated that each office must vaccinate 85 people per day.

According to the newspaper Tribuna de La Habana, in order to achieve all the conditions, sixth year interns and other medical students will assist.

The intervention study will be carried out in parallel to the Phase III trials being conducted in Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo and other trials with health personnel.

It is expected that by the end of 2021, the entire population will be vaccinated. Studies are currently in progress with vaccines for infants who will be the last age group to be vaccinated against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

By the beginning of the next year, Cubans will have access to the Pan-Corona vaccine being developed jointly with China in a laboratory built by China for Cuban scientific personnel. This vaccine has the ability to generate antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 and all its mutations.
