The Cuban President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, will attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, commonly referred to as COP28 Summit, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
COP28 will run from November 30 – December 12. At that time, global leaders will gather at Expo City Dubai.
In his dual roles as president of Cuba and president of the Group of 77 and China, Diaz-Canel travels to Dubai for the conference. The G77 and China held an important summit recently in Havana. As an organization, it represents the voices of the Global South.
Additionally, the G77 and China is a leading player in intergovernmental negotiations on climate change. It brings together developing countries and represents the mechanisms through which the interests and needs of the South are positioned and defended. Climate change is one of its central concerns.
COP28 will launch a Declaration on Relief Recovery and Peace to boost the political commitment needed to address severe barriers to climate action. Additionally, it will review resources for countries and populations affected by climate change, insecurity, and high humanitarian needs.
The goal of COP28 is to unite the global community to drive real climate action.
Following the COP28 conference, Diaz-Canel will travel to Qatar and Iran.
