France’s AFD and the Finlay Institute: Cooperation in Vaccine Development

France’s Agence Française de Développement (AFD) (French Development Agency) reported this week that France’s Ambassador to Cuba, Patrice Paoli, met with Dr. Vicente Vérez Bencomo, Director General of the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IVF), to discuss French-Cuban cooperation in the development of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Cuba’s Finlay Institute of Vaccines (IFV) tweeted about the meeting and excellent collaboration efforts forged over the last two years between France and the IFV.

Cuba thanked France for its support and cooperation in development of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Finlay Institute has been developing Soberana 01, the first Cuban and Latin American vaccine against Covid-19. The Soberana vaccine undergoing clinical trials at the present time.

Phase I clinical trials began on August 24 with two age groups, from 19 to 59 and from 60 to 80 years old. Phase II began September 11 and included 676 more volunteers.

The two countries’ representatives discussed the future potential of cooperation between France and Cuba in the vaccine sector.
