Italy Honours the Cuban Doctors

The lights of the Mole Antonelliana, a major historical building and symbol of the city of Turin, capital of Piedmont, lit up the night skies on July 21 as a message of thanks to Cuba for the work of the Henry Reeve Medical Brigade.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in that country, Cuban doctors went to assist the Italians for a total of 100 days, providing emergency medical care to 5,210 patients according to Dr. Julio Guerra Izquierdo, head of the Henry Reeve Medical Brigade.

Cuba’s doctors first arrived in Italy in March. They worked at the newly constructed field hospital (OGR) in Crema. A second medical brigade joined the doctors in Italy in April.

Alberto Cirio, President of the Piedmont region and Mauro Salizzoni, Vice President of the Regional Council, received the doctors at the Legislative Palace of Piedmont where they were honored and thanked for their professional preparation, dedication, and courage. The Medical Brigade, represented by Dr. Guerra, received Honorary Citizenship of Turin. The event was also attended by the Cuban Ambassador to Italy, José Carlos Rodríguez.
