Trump Regime Returns Cuba to the SSOT List

Yesterday the Trump regime returned Cuba to the State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list. The action comes just six days after outgoing President Biden removed it. Cuba will continue to fight the designation.

It is more than clear that Cuba, a sovereign nation, is the propaganda toy of the United States, whether it be the Republicans or Democrats in power.

Biden decided, albeit late, to take Cuba off the list.

He also issued a six-month waiver of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act and set aside the 2017 so-called “restricted list.”

The decision by Trump is merely an effort to continue 62 years of economic war against Cuba.

In reality, there is no justification or evidence that Cuba belongs on the SSOT list. No one can logically remove a nation from the list and then return it a few days later, given a modicum of common sense or a minimal amount of intelligence.

The designation comes from a nation which has bombed, started wars or intervened to promote regime change in 67 countries since 1945. Most recently since October 2023, the US has funded the Palestinian genocide and started a proxy war in the Ukraine.

Each year at the United Nations, the entire world votes against blockade in the Resolution to End the US Embargo Against Cuba. The only countries supporting the continuation are those in receipt of massive funding from the US.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel described the move by Trump as “an act of arrogance and contempt.”

In his X account, he denounced the action as a mockery and abuse that discredits of the listing and unilateral mechanisms of coercion of the U.S. government.

“… Trump, in an act of arrogance and disregard for the truth, has just reinstated the fraudulent designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism. This is not surprising. His goal is to continue strengthening the cruel economic war against Cuba for the purpose of domination.”

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez described it and the other measures taken by Washington as “medieval and a step backwards in terms of civilization.”

“He knows he is lying. His determination is to increase the punishment and the economic war against Cuban families.”

The measure is one of several that Trump has taken in his first hours in office in relation to Biden’s orders.

Washington first added Cuba to the SSOT list in January 2021. It was one of Trump’s last actions before the end of his first term. It is a blatant move to fulfil the original goals of the US against Cuba. Those goals are the economic destruction of Cuba, as illustrated in the infamous Mallory memorandum of 1960, to create suffering and despair among the Cuban people.
