Cuba’s National Institute of Endocrinology, an institution under the Ministry of Public Health, has the critical task of pursuing cutting-edge research on the science, particularly the treatment of diseases associated with the endocrine glands. The Institute provides care for both the Cuban population and foreign patients. However, more than just the diagnosis and treatment aspects of the diseases, the Institute faces the all-important task of educating the people about diabetes and other major endocrine disorders. The Institute also offers a Diabetes Reproductive Risk consulting service. Under the direction of Dr. Oscar Mateo-de-Acosta, the National Institute of Endocrinology’s multipurpose mission is in research and treatment, equipment and technology, participation in medical congresses related to the field as well as the training and continuing education of medical professionals. The Endocrinology Institute specializes in the treatment of thyroid and other endocrine disorders, reproductive health, diabetes mellitus and metabolic disorders, pediatric endocrinology, ageing, and the treatment of severe osteoporosis.
