On schedule for this Friday, October 7, the national teams of the United States and Cuba will meet for a historic friendly. The game takes place at the Estadio Pedro Marrero stadium in Havana. It is a historical moment because it is the first time since 1947 the U.S. team has visited Cuba for a football friendly.
This is the second time this year that a U.S. team has visited Cuba for a sports event. Earlier this year, during President Obama’s visit, the Tampa Bay Rays played against the Cuban national baseball team. All signs are indicative of positive developments in the Cuba-U.S. relationship.
“We are happy to have the chance to bring our team to Cuba,” said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. “In addition to good competition, we are always looking for our group to have different experiences, and this is a unique opportunity.”
ESPN, Univision Networks and Univision Deportes will be broadcasting live. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
The coach of the Cuban team, Raúl Mederos told Granma, the Cuban news website, “More than the result, we hope to play a great game so that Cuban fans come away satisfied with the effort of our players on the pitch.”
Pitch International will be distributing the international TV rights for the historic match between the Cuban and American soccer teams. Rushmans, in partnership with RTVC, (RTV Cuba), is the distributor, marketer and co-producer of Cuban sports events.
