On Saturday afternoon, the 17th National Meeting of Cubans Residing in Canada took place in Ottawa, drawing members from associations across the country and Cuban nationals.
The gathering provided a platform to review the activities by various Cuban associations, the involvement in the ‘Bridges of Love’ caravans, and the provision of donations to sectors of Cuban society. They also outlined an action plan for the upcoming period, to strengthen organizational activism and promote a sense of identity and love for their homeland among future generations.
Discussions encompassed current Cuban affairs, reflections on the outcomes of the fourth Nation and Emigration conference, and a presentation on business and investment opportunities for Cuban expats.
Following the meeting, the Cubans Residing in Canada Association endorsed a Final Declaration affirming their commitment to supporting Cuba and defending its sovereignty. This declaration included condemnation of the 62 year blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, along with a pledge to coordinate efforts.
Attendees viewed a video of support from Ana Teresita González, Director General of the Directorate General of Consular Affairs and Cubans Resident Abroad, as well as fellow citizens living in other Canadian provinces who wished to take in the event.
Special guests at the event included the Cuban Ambassador to Canada, Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, along with Consul Generals Jorge Yanier Castellanos (Toronto), Susana Malmierca (Montreal), and Consul Mariset Vazquez (Ottawa). Members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Canada also attended as guests.
