From the words of Miriam Escudero, Musicologist:

Legend has it that Havana is the name of a woman, a mythical place founded at the foot of the ceiba tree, who invites us under her shade to renew our vows of fidelity once a year, to perpetuate the utopia that sustains the very existence of this fragile and beautiful city.

Marcos Madrigal believes in that utopia. He returns to Havana this November 5 to 20 of the 503rd anniversary of the city, to celebrate, together with the musical family of Habana Clásica, the reunion and delight us with the enchanting magic of concerts that stimulate life and foster peace.

As a memory-preserving action, the works of Claudio José Domingo Brindis de Salas y Garrido, Cuban violinist (Havana, 1952-Buenos Aires, 1911) and Hubert de Blanck (Utrecht, 1856-Havana, 1932), “wandering” Dutchman and Cuban by adoption, will be played.

Of the heritage that is gestated in the present, we will witness the Havana Concerto by José María Vitier (Havana, 1954), whose three movements, Pórtico, MedioPunto and Vitral, refer us to the turns of La Ceiba, together with Eusebio Leal (Havana, 1942-2020), “with the desire that time embraces us in that spiral”.

We will also attend the premiere of works by two composers in residence, Nicola Sani (Ferrara, 1959), Artistic Director of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, and Juan Piñera (Havana, 1949), Coordinator of the Chair of Composition at the University of the Arts of Cuba.

Habana Clásica welcomes 50 artists, including soloists, conductors and music, theater and dance groups, representing Canada, Cuba, Germany, Holland, Italy, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States and the United Kingdom.

The celebrations continue for a decade of the Esteban Salas Musical Heritage Cabinet, whose mission continues to be to raise awareness, share memory, enjoy emotion, communicate with music and create ecumenical spaces where art is the protagonist.

There will be synergies with the Italian Culture Week, the Contemporary Music Festivals and Mozart Havana. Among many efforts, the support of the Swiss Embassy in Cuba and its “goodwill ambassador”, Lorenzo Suárez (Political, Economic and Cultural Counselor), stands out, while the international NGO MediCuba-Switzerland participates in the organization of social projects. With all this we persevere in the purpose of contributing to artistic education and sustaining culture as a language of understanding, because when art “speaks”, it is easier to unite.
