The recycling company Reciclaje Mariel S.A. has been incorporated in the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZEDM). It is a Cuban company, belonging to the Grupo Empresarial de Reciclaje (GER), founded with 100% Cuban capital.
The company recovers, processes, and commercializes scrap and recyclable waste from industry, commerce, and the community. The company does not recycle or process hazardous or radioactive waste.
Julio Antonio Sardiña Bueno, director of Quality and Communication at GER, told Cuban media that the company will commercialize the recycled products for the domestic and export markets.
He also stated that Reciclaje Mariel was founded with the need to promote effective circular economy strategies in current context while opening the door to the participation of foreign capital in the recycling sector.
Reciclaje Mariel fulfills a development and business role in the ZEDM, but is also aligned with the sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda.
Since the beginning of the year, the recycling company has processed 100,000 tons of ferrous scrap for the steel mills, saving on import requirements at the cost of an estimated $40 million in savings.
Reciclaje Mariel has also recycled 17,000 tons of non-ferrous scrap worth $29 million in income for the Island’s economy.
Grupo Empresarial de Reciclaje belongs to the Ministry of Industries. Its three objectives: taking advantage of human capital capacities and existing financial resources, achieving gradual technological reconversion to increase the value of export products destined for export, and stimulating foreign investment.
